In each painting, the Madonna is depicted in a landscape with a view of Port Lligat, Catalonia (where DalĂ lived). DalĂ´s wife, Gala, was the model for the seated Madonna with the infant Christ on her lap. The rectangular hole cut into her torso is suggestive of her transcendental status.
Born in 1904 in Figueras, Spain, Salvador DalĂ was an eccentric surrealist artist and one of the most recognized names in 20th century art. In 1934, DalĂ’s muse, Gala, encouraged him to come to America, where he became an immediate celebrity. During this time, DalĂ experimented in many new mediums including jewelry. DalĂ first successfully worked with up-and-coming jewelry designer Duke Fulco di Verdura, on pieces that went on display at the Museum of Modern Art as part of a joint DalĂ-MirĂł show. Throughout the 1950s and beyond, DalĂ dreamed up ever more intricate and fantastical jewelry designs, with the help of Argentina-born jeweler Carlos Alemany. DalĂ’s jewelry designs, echoing the imagery in his paintings, were inventive, clever and remarkable.
