Princess Grace and Gucci In 1960, four years after her marriage to Prince Rainier of Mnaco, Grace Kelly visited the Gucci store in the fashion capital of Milan. During this visit, the new princess bought a bag with a bamboo handle and Rudilfo Gucci, the son of the group s founder, wanted to give her a suitable gift. The Italian illustrator Vittorio Accornero was commissioned to design a silk scarf with a motif of flowers and insects, a favorite subject of the princess. The result was a shawl with 43 different flowers and critters in more than 37 colours. The shawl was then put into production and each piece was painted by hand.
