Faberge’s master jewellers developed no less than 145 new enamel colours, which they used to transform objects such as picture frames, clocks and walking sticks into elegant works of art. He applied this fantastic colour and guilloche enamel pattern to objects his clients liked to surround themselves with. It was the way in which he brought together sublime craftsmanship and an elegant everyday lifestyle that earned Fabergé the patronage of the tsars and international royalty. The tsar gave photo frames such as this one, with a photo of himself, as a reward for services rendered. The frame is in the Neoclassical Louis XVI style, the photo is a print of a picture taken on 16 August 1901 by court photographer Levitsky. Design
