The first records of greyhound type dogs appear about 8,000 years ago. They are the oldest purebred dogs, dating to the time of the Pharaohs, where they were used for hunting to chase hare, foxes, and deer. The fastest of dogs, a greyhound can reach a speed of over 40 miles per hour and they are used in racing today. The elegant, flowing bodyline of the greyhound must have inspired the jeweller Ben Rosenfeld to create this brooch. The dogĀ´s smooth, hairy skin is depicted in hand chiselled little stripes in the gold surface. Around his neck is a diamond set collar. RosenfeldĀ´s shop was located in the famous Hatton Garden in London, a jewellery district since the Middle Ages, where he worked from the 1950s to the 1970s. He gained a worldwide reputation for his jewellery designs. A bracelet made by Rosenfeld in the 1960s is in the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
