Description
An antique commemorative bracelet in 18-karat gold with enamel and diamonds. The wide band is fully enameled in black and decorated on the front with a lily-of-the-valley motif, set with rose-cut diamonds of varying sizes. Hallmarked for the Austro-Hungarian Empire 1872-1922, with a Dutch import hallmark from the period 1831-1893 and a maker's mark JB. The case is signed CJ Begeer (Carel Joseph Begeer), Utrecht.
Lilies of the valley were often used in Victorian mourning jewelry. They represent many things: the tears of the Virgin Mary, memories of a mother or grandmother, a ladder to heaven, and a return to happiness. Just like the arrival of spring, the promise of better times, renewal.
Austria-Hungary, circa 1860
