Description

Antique watch with verge escapement signed Lépine a Paris 528. A chased 18-carat gold case tinted in three colors.

Jean-Antoine Lépine is often called the father of the modern watch. He was appointed clockmaker (horloger du Roy) to Louis IV around 1766 which he stayed until 1790 or 1792 when the revolution in France became rather heated and the mere mention of te monarch was dangerous. Lépine's watches were famous for their sleek elegance and increasingly inventive technology.
