Description

A tubogas necklace in 14k yellow gold. Length 33 cm. Master's mark HJ Tap (The Hague, 1950-1970).

Tubogas (gas pipe) is the name given to a chain of interlocking strips of gold tightly wound together. A tubogas bracelet or necklace is a flexible, hollow chain that does not require soldering. The handmade tubogas technique has been around for centuries and became extremely popular in the 1940s, when innovations were needed to accommodate the scarcity of jewelry materials.

Netherlands, circa 1950
